Tour leader Tony Williams is keeping us up-to-date with the arrival of Common Cranes to La Brenne, France …

The Cranes started arriving early this year, with the first flocks seen on 13th October, and there were a staggering 45,000+ Cranes at the Lac du Der a week last Saturday – the most they’ve ever had together.

A very rare moth (European Habitat directive) species, Eriogaster catax, was found on 15th October at the Chérine National Nature Reserve in Brenne for only the second time.

A colony of Idas Blue (Plebejus idas) butterflies was found on a reserve at La Touche (Naturetrek has access to this reserve on the La Brenne tour) here; it’s the first confirmed sighting since the 1980s.

Large numbers of Whiskered Terns nested but weren’t that successful due to heavy thunder storms in July.

Two new hides are going up at the moment on a recently required addition to the Chérine National Nature Reserve – they’re on the side of the Sous Lake; we’ve also had breeding Black-necked Grebes and Little Bittern. One hide will be public and one private (once again, the Naturetrek La Brenne tour has access).

Tony Williams leads our 6-day France – Butterflies of La Brenne, and our 5-day France – Cranes & Woodpeckers tours.
